GROUP VOLUNTEERS

The Frederick Running Festival really needs your help in making this a successful event! We are looking for spirited volunteers (individuals or groups) to: man water stations, help at registration, work at the start line, be race marshals, monitor relay exchange points, or hand out medals at the finish line. There is a volunteer position for everyone. Volunteering is a great way to make friends, feel needed and useful, and give a little back to the community. Volunteers will receive commemorative shirts.

Possible Saturday Positions
Registration

Help with last minute registration. This will take place at the Frederick Fairgrounds.

Packet Pick-up

All registered runners must come to the Frederick Fairgrounds to pickup their runner's packet. The runner's packet IS their ENTRY to the race. It contains their bib number, pins, route map, start line instructions, and any additional information or tickets as needed. You are there to ensure that each runner is properly identified and picks up their designated packet. You will then direct them to the Chip-Check station and Goodie bag/T-shirt pickup location.

Goodie Bags/T-shirt Distribution

After runners pick up their packets and bib numbers, they will come to the Goodie-Bag station. Your job is to present them with their commemorative race T-shirt and bag of loot. You will need to check them off when they get their bag.

Possible Sunday Positions
Volunteer Headquarters

Volunteers staff the Volunteer Headquarters where volunteers will congregate before and after their shifts to sign-in or out, and distribute their volunteer T-shirts. The volunteers there will need to check them in/out, answer questions, direct them to their volunteer positions, and keep the refreshment tables restocked.

Gear Check

5:30 am -7:00 am: Set up the tables, hang signs, and prep the Gear Check area in Frederick Fairgrounds. Handle bag collection (runners' drop-off) and bag organization (sorting them numerically by bib number).
9:30 am - 2:00 pm: Greet runners after they've finished the race. Find and return their bags to them quickly and efficiently.

Breakdown Crew

Once the race is concluded on Sunday afternoon, help pack-up, load trucks, and transport equipment and supplies. Help breakdown the registration and finish line areas. Also, assist the road race crew in picking up tables from water stations.

Course
Course Logistics (set-up)

Starting as early as 4:00 am, travel with the road race crew to lay down all signage, timing clocks, and mile markers. They will also help set-up the finish line corral and water stations. Strong backs, and people who like a good workout are encouraged!

Start Line Crew

Direct runners to the staging areas, answer questions about corralling, and hold signs. Welcome runners to the beginning of the race and help them find their place at the starting line. After the start, pick-up discarded clothing to donate to charity and help clear the area.

Team Relay Exchange Zones

Volunteers will be located at three locations along the marathon course where participants in the Team Relay will trade off. Set-up area, hang signage, and guide runners to the exchange points. Explain how to transfer the timing chip from one teammate to the other. Provide the runners who just finished their leg with congratulations and instructions on how to get to the finish line. There will also be blankets available for runners who need them.

Course Marshall/Spotter

Volunteers are located all along the marathon route to provide moral support for runners as they pass, and also monitor and identify runners who do not follow the official course. Ensure the route is clear and safe, and notify aid stations of any runners who may need assistance.

Water/Fluid Stations and Gel/Fruit Stations

One of the most important things is to provide runners with essential fluids along the way. Setup and man fluid stations on the course. Provide water/sport drink to runners as they pass. There will be two locations on the route where gel and fruit will be distributed to the runners. Setup signage and tables, open boxes, and hand the gel and/or fruit to the runners as they pass.

Clocks

There are timing clocks located along the course. Volunteers will monitor each clock.

Finish Line Corral

Once runners cross the finish line, they will enter an enclosed area (corral) exclusively for race participants. As runners finish the race, a team of volunteers will greet them. These volunteers will assist runners in need of medical attention to the medical area, and also have one of the following responsibilities:

Chip Recovery/Medals/Blankets/ Food & Beverages

Use scissors to clip the "chip" timing devices off each runner's shoe. The volunteers will collect the chips so that they can be returned to the manufacturer. Present each runner with an official Frederick Marathon Finishers Medal. The individual medals will need to unwrapped and separated prior to distribution. Unpack, separate, and distribute blankets to runners in the finishers corral. We provide each runner with their own blanket, to keep runners warm after the race. Distribute bottles of water and sports drink inside the runners corral. Volunteers will keep the tables stocked with food such as bagels, chips, pretzels, and fruit.

Security/Access Control

At the start and finish line areas, there are a variety of tents and corrals created specifically for certain guests or runners. Your job will be to man the entry/exit points and make sure only people with the correct credentials get access to those areas, (i.e. awards stage, finishers' corral, medical tents, etc.
